Appointment, apartment, pub
Hey friends and family, your comments are really making us laugh!
We had to go to the adoption center this afternoon to get the finalized stack of sealed documents (our dossier) with a formal letter signed by the director that officially refers us to this particular child before we could actually see the child. By the time we got it this afternoon (much relief!) it was too late to go to the orphanage. Bummer!
The good news is, we shouldn't have to go back to the NAC anymore, if we decide this is the right child for us. The process would wind us through a physician's office, a courtroom and the U.S. Embassy--the last stop. But I'm getting ahead of things. The real challenge will come after we meet her. We'll have to wait til Monday for that...
Meanwhile, we moved again. The landlord wanted to raise the price on that cool one-bedroom place so we packed up all of our stuff and moved into one of her other apartments. Our awesome driver Sergei wound us through traffic like New York City to get us here. This place is smaller but it's even closer to downtown, and it's almost half the price.
John and I found an Irish pub up the road where the waitresses understand English. They are advertising that they'll show the Super Bowl, but it will start at midnight Sunday. We are 7 hours ahead of Michigan. So we are contemplating whether we want to brave the really cold temps and tromp through the snow to our apartment at 3 am when the game ends...We're told there is very little crime this time of year. Can you see a potential mugger hiding in the bushes, frozen to death?
I bought a handmade leather and fur hat (see pic) and boots, so don't worry, cousin Sally, I'm staying warm!
Oh, we went to a big grocery store today and there was a guy in a black leather jacket standing in the lobby, swigging down a beer. This is legal here!
Austin: I hope you had fun at Eli's house. We miss you so much!

You know, I was actually working, just doing my actual job (that I'm actually paid for 1 x a month) when it struck me: Maybe Laura Wrote in the Blog!!
And it turns out I was right!!!
I love the hat and boots! I feel better now, thank you. Sigh. I'm glad you got all that paperwork done, too, but sorry you can't see the girl until MONDAY!! ARGHHHHH!
And you had to move again! Geez, the rent JUST went up today for no reason??? Not because some rich, fit American lady with a stylish haircut, and contemporary boots--not to mention her tall, goodlooking--(albeit pale under bright light bulbs)husband--just moved in?
Why didn't you buy the landlady some vodka or a hat? Or give her a McDonalds' gift certificate...
OK! OK then! I'm just gonna have to wait til MONDAY. I probably can't look at this over the weekend because I woud have to install about 50 virus updates on my laptop that I borrow from this job. That would take about 48 hours probably anyway. Go watch the game--he's earned it (-;

Laura, does your apt have a tv? Might be safer than being on the street at 3:00am, especially 2 such good-looking rich Americans. OK, OK, I feel like a mother to you; just ganging up with your mom. Hi Jeanne!
ms. mom (as Pam's husband Dave calls me)
gramma elly (as grandkids call me)
Yay, you had a chance to make a posting! Boo, you didn't meet la ninya! Yay, you get to watch the Superbowl! Boo, you will be hungover and scary looking to la ninya! Yay, your boots are contemporary! Boo, the man at the supermarket didn't share his beer witchyoo! Keep it coming, and, LOL re: frozen mugger! Philosophical Thought:There is a light at the end of this tunnel now, and it is not an oncoming train, Yay! :o)

Will you wear the hat the next time we go to lunch? So what if it is 60 degrees here by then... I was so bummed to read that you have to wait again--a whole weekend. Can't wait to read Monday's update.
Laura & John:
As you can see, the Weston family is having entirely too much fun with your blog. We are, er, hogging your blog, logging in over 80% of the comments.
I'll cross my fingers that when you meet the little girl Monday, you feel like it is a fit. If not, you will stay in Kiev and start over?
There is electricity in the air in Philadelphia (which is not nearly as hip as Kiev), because our Eagles are in the Super Bowl. Philadelphians are perpetual underdogs with a small town mentality, so *everyone* rallies when a team makes it this far. I hope you get to watch it. Ignore what my mom said.

Posted by: heidi at February 4, 2005 06:43 PMHey guys the photos are cool, and so is that Charlies Angels hat. Where are all the old ladies in bubuskas?
That guy in black leather jacket was probably Elvis. GO to the Irish pub, drink german beer, watch the SUPER Bowl, and walk home down the Kiev streets. Like in a great russian novel.
Enjoy your weekend. You have a big week coming up.
Hey guys...
Sounds like my idea of heaven -- street-corner beer:-). So since it's been forever since I've seen you, it's been great to see the photos. Laura, your hair looks fab! I keep tuning in every day for updates -- like a soap opera, except its real and we only want happy endings! I hope the weekend speeds by.
